Trip to Pulau Baru-Baru and Pulau Berambang, 8th April 2007

As a very passionate person, my first impression of the Islands outing was that it would be both thrilling and fun!! We gathered at the jetty as early as 7am. Excitement and anxiety filled my heart and soul, as I hopped into the boat expecting the unexpected. As we moved along the river, one could feel the morning breeze while viewing the mangroves lining the river and the magnificent water village.

Our first stop was at Kg Riong, Pulau Berambang. Here we warmed our muscles with a wonderful 30 minute walk through a fresh ‘Kampung’ like atmosphere, greeted by waving children. Along the way, I came across unusual plant species as well as an extraordinary ‘bamboo-built structure’ that brings
natural spring water downhill. Soon enough, I was at the base of Bukit Batu Bujang Pahang. I then hiked up the hill, and after about ten minutes, came across a sign stating ‘Menuju Kelubang Arang’ (Toward the Coal’s hole). Feeling curious, I went with my pal to explore the abandoned coal mining area. We were left behind by the group at that time.

While we were hiking up to the peak, I managed to spot a gigantic weird looking insect and a few parrot-like birds. We continued our way up the hill and soon met up with the others at the top. In fact, everyone decided to have a short break here while enjoying the beautiful and breathtaking scenery.

We continued our journey, and soon discovered another spectacular natural structure (a stone cave opening). It was about 11.30 when we arrived at the residential area of Kg Menunggol Laut. Here, I was surprised to witness a pair of deer in captivity. Without much concern over the deer, we then gathered at the Kg Menunggol Laut jetty.

Our last stop was at Pulau Baru-baru, where we visited a charcoal kiln and a farm. Here, some of us were entertained by the owner’s description of the process of charcoal production while others enjoyed themselves on the farmland behind the factory. The trip ended at noon.

Many thanks to Hjh Masnah & Tan Moi Chan for leading this very enjoyable outing. (Chak Wang Hoon, UBD)
